Tamil Grammar #1 - (3 persons)
This portion of Tamil grammar is just like the one we learn in English as "persons".
First, second, and third person are ways of describing points of view.
- First person is Thanmai (தன்மை)
- Second person is Munnilai ( முன்னிலை)
- Third person is Padarkai (படர்க்கை)
This also introduces us to another concept Singular & Plural which is Orumai & Panmai. We have discussed this in our other post.

Short tip to identify Thanmai, Munnilai & Padarkai when you're the speaker.
தன்மை:
தன்னைப் பற்றி சொல்வது. கண்களால் காணலாம். (பேசுபவர், சொல்பவர்)
Talking about Self. (person who speaks)
முன்னிலை:
தனக்கு முன்னால் இருந்து தான் சொல்வதை கேட்பவர். கண்களால் காணலாம். (கேட்பவர்)
Talking about the person in front of you.
படர்க்கை:
தன்னைப்பற்றியும், தன் முன்னால் இருந்து கேட்பவர் பற்றியும் கூறாது மூன்றாவது நபரைப் பற்றி பேசுவது.
Talking about the third person.
